What Is a Mold Temperature Controller?

It is also different from a hot runner temperature controller, which powers the heaters inside a hot runner manifold and does not circulate heat-transfer fluid through the mold.

Water or Oil?

Water units are the usual choice for most thermoplastics. Non-pressurized units run to around 90 °C; above water's atmospheric boiling point a pressurized water unit is required, with models rated to roughly 140–180 °C. Confirm the rated operating temperature and pressure of the proposed model.

Oil units cover higher temperatures, commonly 200 °C and above, at the cost of lower heat transfer efficiency, oil handling and more maintenance.

Dual-circuit units control two mold halves or zones independently from one cabinet when core and cavity need different temperatures.

How to Choose a Mold Temperature Controller

Size heating and cooling capacity from the mold, not the machine. Heating capacity in kW sets how fast the mold reaches temperature after a changeover; cooling capacity sets whether the unit can hold temperature once the melt delivers heat every cycle. Ask the supplier to size against mold weight, resin, shot weight and cycle time.

Check pump flow and pressure against your channel layout. A unit that reaches the set temperature but cannot push enough flow through a long, small-diameter circuit shows a large inlet-to-outlet difference and uneven parts. Flow rate and pump head belong on the specification next to temperature.

Match the medium and model to the conditions you will actually run. Select from the required operating temperature and pressure, heat-transfer performance and maintenance requirements, and confirm the proposed model is rated for those conditions.

Ask about control and connectivity. Flow measurement, leak-stop and mold-drain functions, and an interface to the molding machine or a monitoring system, matter as much as the heater if you plan to track process data.
