Food-Grade Solvent-Based Ink

UP45 Half-Inch 42 ml Food-Grade Magenta Solvent-Based TIJ Industrial Ink Cartridge

Compatible with HP 2580/2590|SGS SVHC Tested|A First Choice for Washed Egg and Food Packaging Coding

Product Features

The half-inch food-grade magenta solvent-based cartridge has passed SGS SVHC testing, and the test report is available for your records. Magenta forms clear contrast on both brown and white eggshells, making it the most widely used colour for printing traceability codes and washing dates on washed egg lines.

Advantages of the UP45 Half-Inch Food-Grade Magenta Solvent Cartridge

1. The Signature Colour for Egg Coding

Magenta does not get lost against brown shells, and it is the eggshell marking consumers recognise most readily in the market.

2. Fast-Drying Formulation for Rolling Eggs in Contact with One Another

The fast-drying magenta formulation sets within a short time of the ink landing, reducing smearing and cross-contamination so that markings across a whole tray stay uniformly legible.

3. Strong Adhesion on Curved, Porous Eggshell Surfaces

Eggshells are curved, porous and often carry a trace film of moisture, placing tougher demands on ink penetration and adhesion than flat packaging does. The UniPlus food-grade magenta cartridge keeps character edges clean on these surfaces, making it well suited to high-speed continuous marking with an egg coding machine.

Substrates Suited to Food-Grade Magenta

Food-grade magenta is intended primarily for food-contact scenarios, covering the outer surface of eggshells and the outside of food packaging materials, with clear contrast on brown shells, white shells and light-coloured packaging alike.

Commonly printable surfaces:

  • Eggshells: brown and white eggs (used with an egg coding machine)
  • Food packaging films: food-grade flexible packaging films in PE, PP, PET and OPP
  • Food paper materials: egg cartons, white card colour boxes, liner paper and laminated food cartons
  • Food containers: PP and PET plastic trays, sealing films and light-coloured bottles
  • Aluminium foil sealing film and laminated metal lidding
  • Other light-coloured food outer packaging surfaces

Please note: food-grade ink should be printed on the outer surface of eggshells or the outside of food packaging, and is not recommended for printing directly onto food itself; the ink is not edible. Any water film or grease remaining on the eggshell will affect adhesion, so please check that the drying stage after washing is sufficient. Surface material, coatings, temperature and humidity all influence adhesion and drying performance. We recommend sample testing before full production to confirm the most suitable ink formulation and equipment parameters.

Food-Grade Magenta vs. Food-Grade Blue Solvent Ink Cartridges Comparison

The UniPlus solvent-based cartridge series offers two food-grade colours: food-grade magenta and food-grade blue. They differ in substrate contrast and in in-house colour management conventions, and many egg producers use both to distinguish washing dates or egg grades.

Food-Grade Magenta (this product)Food-Grade Blue

Compatibility Check

The half-inch food-grade magenta solvent-based ink cartridge is compatible with most non-encrypted half-inch coding systems on the market. Besides replacing the common HP 2580 and HP 2590 cartridges, it also suits a wide range of handheld and inline TIJ coders.

Purchasing scenarios particularly suited to food-grade magenta:

  • Egg producers face customer demands around food safety and need test documentation showing the ink is suitable for food contact, so buyers can purchase with confidence.
  • Egg washing plants and egg processing facilities; agricultural producers that need to mark traceability codes; food and bakery factories required to supply food-contact documentation for customer audits or factory inspections; and equipment suppliers and system integrators offering complete egg coding line solutions.

Use and Storage Recommendations

Storage conditions:

  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • Keep away from environments with excessive dust
  • Do not store upside down for extended periods

Usage in food factories:

  • When pausing use, refit the cartridge into its protective clip so the printhead is not left exposed for long periods
  • Use within six months of opening
  • Even with no immediate printing requirement, run a test print roughly every two weeks to extend cartridge service life
  • Store food-grade cartridges separately from standard colour cartridges, and record batch numbers in your issue log to support traceability
  • Ink is not edible. Keep out of reach of children; avoid contact with skin and eyes and rinse promptly with clean water in case of contact

FAQ

Does "food-grade" mean this ink is edible?

No, it is not edible. Food-grade means the ink has passed food-contact testing and is suitable for marking the outer surface of eggshells and the outside of food packaging. The ink itself is not for consumption, and should be kept where children cannot reach it.

Will the marking on the eggshell smudge after refrigeration, transport and carton stacking?

Coding on washed eggs is usually scheduled after washing and drying, so the marking is not carried away by the washing process. Once the solvent evaporates, the colourant bonds firmly to the shell and resists blurring through condensation in refrigeration, handling friction and carton stacking.

If a water film or grease is still on the shell surface at the moment of printing, adhesion drops noticeably — we suggest checking whether the drying section provides sufficient time and airflow.

What equipment is needed to introduce egg coding?

You need an egg coding machine that integrates into the washed egg line, together with a printhead mounting fixture matched to the rolling motion and spacing of the eggs. How the print position and egg spacing work together directly determines the success rate.
